Towards Macroscopic Quantum Physics with Levitated Particles

We will discuss the motivation and prospects to explore macroscopic quantum physics with levitated nanoparticles in the context of state-of-the-art experiments. Particular emphasis will be put into the challenges imposed by decoherence. In this context, we will present our recent proposal (arXiv: 2012.12260) to generate large quantum delocalization of a levitated nanoparticle using optimal control and the applications for force sensing and entangling the motion of particles via weak forces.
